World Book Day Celebrations & Creations

P2/3 had such fun last week on World Book Day-the day was full of laughter and smiles which is my favourite sort of day! ☺️

The children all came in dressed up and we started the day by guessing who they were. Can you guess?

The excitement for our crafty potato session was too much for some so we got started on that quite quickly. ☺️ The children were so creative, what fantastic book character potatoes came from it!

The children also got creative while using the Duplo and built a scene from one of their favourite books 📖 it involves an ancient castle and a great hall and I’d say it’s pretty “magical” ☺️

We also used this week to start a relatively new skill of story-mapping. We have chosen to use The Dinosaur 🦖 that Pooped 💩 a Planet 🪐 for our writing over the next few weeks. Story mapping does just what it says on the tin…we are mapping the story out in simple terms so the children can retell it themselves, using and developing their own language. Lots of opportunities to do this will enable them to become better storytellers themselves and will lead to improved story-writing.

Our drawing skills also got put to the test during these lessons…drawing a dinosaur can be quite tricky! 🦖😂🙈

Check back soon to see more of our adventures and Talk for Writing soon.

February Fun!

Sorry for the slightly delayed blog post everybody but building snowmen and igloos took priority today ❄️☺️

It was lovely to welcome back P2/3 last week and hear of their long weekend adventures. We started off with some co-operative work in the form of inventing space vehicles!

Our budding young engineers donned their thinking caps and worked together to make rockets, UFO’s, moon buggies and even the International Space Station! Take a look below…

“Where do we even start guys?!”
Nifty NASA stickers to finish them off!

We also had Chromebook buddies with P6/7 where we learned how to access apps and download them onto the Chromebook. The children chose some really cool apps that involved problem solving and word building and that was without direction from me…proud teacher right here! ☺️

Proud of their village building!
Can you guess who the lady with pink hair is?? Flip-a-clip was a hit!

We finished off our week celebrating “the good” and thinking about how we can go forward from “the bad”. We love to round up our week by talking about things that made us happy and also about things that didn’t go to plan and how we can tackle those situations next time.

My heart melted and I had the biggest smile on my face when I got told “Miss Barclay… “M” made my heart shine bright this week because she is so nice to me.” 😍😍😍 We also love it when children who are not so confident, feel happy enough to come and share their successes with us…

Happy children, happy teacher, happy week. ☺️

Awesome Aurora Borealis ☀️🌬🌪🌌

P2/3 have been so engaged during our Destination Outer Space topic. They are loving asking questions and using various ways to find the answers with our shiny new topic information books, chromebooks or putting my space knowledge to the test! 🙈

This week, we learned about how the Aurora Borealis is formed. Hopefully your child will have told you that the Northern Lights are caused by storms that come from the sun and when the storms hit our atmosphere, they create the waves of light that we see in the sky.

The children were so pleased with their simple yet beautifully effective Aurora Borealis chalk pictures. See their effort below…

Well done boys and girls! I hope you’ve also been singing your days of the week and months of the year jingles at home too! 🎶

Inverness Caley Thistle capers!

Last week, P2/3 were lucky to have Craig and Scott in from Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s community team to give them a taster session.

The children were a credit to our school, showing fantastic listening skills throughout and determination to tackle all the tasks set.

There were even a few dance moves thrown in too ☺️

Below are all the football sessions that Caley Thistle currently offer…

Super Shapes

P2/3 have been tying up some loose ends on their shape topic in maths recently.

P3 were challenged to name the 3D shapes independently and then build some of them from lolly pop sticks and play doh. While doing this, they talked about their properties…corners, edges, faces etc. They even made some new shapes of their own!

P2’s were reminding themselves of the names of the 3D shapes and thinking about where we see these in everyday life. We sorted them into categories and talked about clues to help us recognise them.

Way to go P2/3…keep revising the names of the shapes at home. P3’s can you tell your adults how many sides a dodecahedron has??

Next up…Time! ⏰

Christmas Crafts and Tile Tessellations!

P2/3 have been extremely busy this week perfecting funky dance moves, creating crafty Christmas things and being totally terrific with tiling/tessellations! ⭐️ Can you tell I love an alliteration! 😂

We can’t wait to see you at the Christmas Fayre tomorrow evening where you will find P2/3’s yummy Reindeer Noses as well as our beautifully decorated and beautifully-smelling Christmas tree pine cone decorations. 🎄

P2 were investigating which 2D shapes would tile today while P3 were being challenged to choose a range of shapes and tile with them independently.

Some children enjoyed investigating using our magnetic shapes and others chose to challenge themselves by drawing around the shapes. I was very impressed with their work. Well done P2/3! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Super shapes!

What a busy week we had in P2/3 last week. The children started off the week by sharing their new Bug Club books with me.

We used “who, what, where, why and when” prompts for them to give me an account of the book in their own words. They are becoming very good at giving me these details in a logical order now.

Opinions were flowing while the children were using their inference skills too! See below…

Th children blew me away with their knowledge of 2D shape and had lots of fun showing me their tiling abilities as well as using their imagination to create shape scenes with our sparkly shapes!

On Thursday, we had a very successful first Chromebook Buddy session with P6/7. P2 were learning to log on with increasing independence while the P3’s were logging on independently and then being shown how to access apps. We can’t wait for next week!

All in all, another brilliant week in P2/3. Thanks for checking in. 👍🏻

End of term treats!

What a fantastic end to Term 1 with P2/3. They earned their Gruffalo Party with a “secret star” being picked each day to earn 3 ticks on our chart. I am so proud of them!

It is truly amazing the different learning/discussions/experiences you can get out of one book. As you know, our topic is Julia Donaldson and Friends and her books send lots of fantastic messages to our little ones. The have also chuckled their way through me reading the Scots versions too! 🙈

The books bring a whole plethora of new language to the children in both English and Scots although I’m not sure when they’ll use the word “Clockleddy” again!!

The Gruffalo Crumble was a hit with some kids coming back for 3rd helpings! 😋 (Thanks to Mrs Barclay for that one! 😍)

Not many photos as I was too busy serving out the Crumble but have a look at the fun below..

Thank you all for your support through a busy first term. We hope you have a fantastic holiday and we’ll see you back in 2 weeks.

Awesome Aigas visit and lots more…

Where do I start…what a productive and fun week with P2/3!

We have been reading “What the Ladybird Heard” and used our art session to paint the characters for a beautiful display. We have a lot of budding young Picasso’s in our class!

The children were also in fits of giggles at me reading “What the Ladybird Heard” in Scots. Can the tell you the name for a Ladybird in Scots?? Or any of the other animals? Answer: it’s a Clockleddy! 😂

We had a visit from Aigas field centre to feed our curiosity on hibernation and migration. This will fit in beautifully when we read The Gruffalo’s child and we think about animals in winter.

The children were tasked to make warm and cozy hedgehog homes and what a job they made of them! Such careful thought and great teamwork to build masterpieces!

We were trying out our ball skills in gym this week. The challenge was to only use the inside of our feet to dribble the ball. We also finished with a penalty shoot out…move over Ronaldo and Messi! ⚽️

We had some very proud architects wanting to show their creations on the blog too…

…and we finished the week off by winning the Top Banana 🍌 award for most fruit brought in for snack! Well done P2/3…I’m very proud of you all!

What a great week, let’s see what this one brings. Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 👋🏼
